grew up in the beautiful Adirondacks of Upstate New York. I used to love traipsing around forests filled with pine trees and soft, green moss. The streams that trickled through the mountains were swift and clear. Living alongside the Sacandaga River, where it met the Hudson--250 miles north of NYC, lended to a nice retreat any child would love! Of course, growing up there, it was almost taken for granted due to the ample woods to hike in as well as mountain vistas that make the Adirondacks so friendly, even today.
s a child, I remember my love for letters...whether it was doodling little notes to family or friends, or just simply outlining in my mind the shapes of the trees or landscapes that were prevalent to that area, it didn't matter. I love the tactile side of pen to paper. Many times, when I was supposed to be doing my homework, I would be writing letters to my pen pals and family who lived in another state or country. My love for calligraphy started when I received a book as a graduation present. I knew what it was, but I didn't know that it was more of a PRACTICE and drawing that just "writing" pretty! Of course, as a novice calligrapher I "thought I was better than I was" actually, when I started, but everyone has to start somewhere and I always got smiles when I'd make something for somebody! I think that made me strive to better myself at first.
y first calligraphy class was many years after I received that book and I learned more in that first lesson that I think I have learned since. It opened my eyes to EVERYTHING I was doing WRONG. Since I taught myself and never saw anyone SHOW me how to do it... it was such an awakening moment! For 20 years following that epiphany, I have studied with some of the most intriguing and fascinating calligraphers such as Denis Brown, Karl Rohrs, Annie Cicale, Timothy Botts, Penny Price, Pat Blair, Sharon Zeugin, Barbara Locke and many, many more. For me, the journey has been so pleasurable and rewarding. The best thing for me is to see the joy in someone's eyes when they first see the piece that I made for them or hear their voice over the phone saying that they couldn't stop staring at the little "piece of sunshine" in their mailbox which brightened their day! That means the world to me!
currently reside in Austin, Texas with my husband and three "Dog-ters". I proudly belong to the guild here: Capital City Scribes, which feeds me both creatively and socially. I have been blessed with some of the deepest friendships with other colleagues who share my passion for this art!
